Ruston cross country continues strong showing in Baton Rouge

BATON ROUGE, La. — Both junior Lily Garrett and senior Caleb Babineaux placed first overall this past weekend at the St. Joseph’s Academy Cross Country Invitational 2021 and sent both squads to finishing second overall at the respective races.

“It rained all week in Baton Rouge, so the times were much slower than they should’ve been,” Ruston head cross country coach Dustin Cochran said. “It made it a mud fest for sure. However, we got all the best teams in the state in one place, and it was awesome to compete against everyone. For Caleb and Lily to both win this meet, that’s pretty special. This meet definitely sets up what the state meet could be like.”

Babineaux’s time of 15:56.17 in the three-mile race led the pack, while junior Bryar Madden finished 10th at 16:24.69. Rounding out the scorers for Ruston were sophomore Landon Byrd (20th, 16:42.26), junior Cole Maestrini (37th, 17:17.25) and junior Andrew McKaskle (42nd, 17:24.91).

For the girls, Garrett’s time of 18:33.42 was nearly 16 seconds better than second place. Freshman Sydney Owens placed ninth at 19:38.82. Other Ruston scorers were senior Anna Naff (22nd, 20:19.69), sophomore Zoie Holstead (25th, 20:33.86), and freshman Sara Naff (26th, 20:35.01).
