Tech’s walking group looking to make big steps

By Thomas Stodghill, IV

Members of the Louisiana Tech community have recently formed a walking group, and they are looking to add more people to this group to help participants’ overall health.

This group was formed by Louisiana Tech President Dr. Les Guice. He began to work with two members of Tech’s department of kinesiology, Lacey Deal and Jessica Syzmanski, to find a way for members of the Tech family to enjoy exercising together.

Guice explained what doing this every week has done for him.

“I began walking for health almost a year ago, and the activity has had such a positive impact on my physical and mental well-being,” Guice said.

He also said that this past year has presented great challenges, and walking together has helped people grow friendships, have fun and take the opportunity to relax together.

The walking group meets almost every Saturday at 8 a.m. at the bottom of Guice’s driveway near Joe Alliet Stadium. They walk various distances — from one to three miles — through Louisiana Tech’s campus.

“These pleasant walks have allowed us the opportunity to develop relationships between folks in different areas of our university,” Guice said.

The group currently has about 60 members, which includes Tech faculty, staff, students and alumni.

They plan to meet every Saturday morning throughout the fall quarter, weather permitting. Guice said he wanted to make these walks a habit.
