Hillcrest Elementary prepares for end of year art show

Hillcrest Elementary School is a K-2 school in Ruston and home to the Hawks. This Thursday, the school will be home to an end of school art show presented by art teacher Anna Alexander with lots of help from Kelli Colvin, who is a coordinating teacher at Hillcrest.

“I love being an art teacher and I am very passionate about showing kids how to become better artists and open their eyes to different techniques you can do in art,” Alexander said.

This isn’t a typical art show though. This year, Hillcrest’s art show is a scavenger hunt where parents and students will be able to interact and be more engaged with the art the kids have made through the year.

Parents and students will have a question sheet they will have to answer based on informational passages related to the artwork as they walk around the school with answer keys posted at the front doors.

“I have come up with all the passages, questions, answers,” Colvin said. “That is just a lot of detailed information to compile, sort, print, copy and post.”

Colvin said she is excited for parents to come to this event as they get to walk around the entire school with their child and get to experience school through the eyes of their child.

The kindergarten class focused on projects related to color theory and literature, the first grade class focused on creating art based on art around the world/ culture art and the second grade class focused on works inspired by famous artists.

“One of my favorite projects the kindergarteners did was made out of recycled CDs,” Alexander said. “They turned them into peacocks and snails. I love how colorful they turned out and I felt like we were helping our environment by not just throwing all these CDs into a landfill.”

Alexander and Colvin said they both hope children and parents get to take home a positive experience away from this. Alexander added she only wished she had more time for her students to create bigger and better projects.

“I am excited for them to see all of the hard work their child has put into their artwork and hopefully learn a little something about art after they leave,” Alexander said.
