On Thursday, June 22, 2023, the Homer Police Department was notified of a shooting that had reportedly occurred that day at 229 West Third Street in Homer. Homer police responded and learned Ja’Kerion Calome of Homer had sustained a gunshot wound. Calome, an eighteen-year-old senior at Homer High School, died because of his injuries.
Homer police initiated an investigation into the shooting, but, because of a potential conflict of interest, subsequently turned the investigation over to the Claiborne Parish Sheriff’s Office (CPSO).

CPSO’s investigation is ongoing. Further charges and arrests are pending.
Claiborne Parish Sheriff Sam Dowies encourages anyone with information about the death of Calome to contact the CPSO at (318) 927-2011 or claibornesheriff.org.
