Tech’s Randle issues apology over on-field action

Louisiana Tech linebacker Brevin Randle issued an apology through the University’s Athletic Strategic Communications Department Monday afternoon following his on-the-field action during the Bulldogs 24-10 win over UTEP Friday night.

During a play in the second quarter of the win, Randle was shown intentionally stepping on the back of the neck area of UTEP offensive lineman Steven Hubbard who was lying on the field following the end of a play in which the Bulldogs recovered a fumble.

Although the officiating crew didn’t see the play thus no penalty was called, it became very public on social media during the game and following the contest.

“I want to apologize and take full accountability for my action towards Steven Hubbard and the UTEP football program,” said the statement by Randle. “I am aware that my action was unacceptable, and does not align with what Louisiana Tech or I stand for.

“Although one play does not define me as a person or a player, I take this as a lesson to learn from and hope others can learn from me because I will never condone behavior of this matter. I hope this finds your heart well as I plan to use my time away from the game I love to reflect on how I have impacted Steven, my university, team and family.”

Louisiana Tech officials announced Saturday afternoon that Randle was suspended indefinitely for his actions as Director of Athletics Eric Wood and head coach Sonny Cumbie both issued statements.

“Coach Cumbie and I met with Brevin Randle today and informed him that he has been suspended indefinitely as a result of the incident during last night’s game versus UTEP,” said Wood in the statement Saturday. “In speaking with Brevin, he acknowledges that his action was wrong and understands the consequence of that action. Our University, athletic department, and football program believe in culture, class, and competitive excellence and in no way was that displayed in that moment.”

On Saturday evening, Tech head coach Sonny Cumbie went to his personal twitter account with his statement.

“I want to apologize to coach Dimel, Steven Hubbard and the UTEP football program on behalf of our team and coaching staff,” said Cumbie. “What happened during the game was far outside the bounds of sportsmanship and competition. We have indefinitely suspended Brevin and will continue to address consequences.”

The Bulldogs will host WKU Thursday at 7 p.m. at Joe Aillet Stadium.
