Louisiana Tech’s softball complex was at near capacity Friday morning as busloads of third, fourth and fifth-graders from Cypress Springs Elementary were treated to a pep rally for the LEAP test as part of a theme week for the school that celebrated its B rating in the most recent school performance scores.
Cypress Springs principal Mary Kilgore has made the pre-LEAP theme week a tradition now for the last few years.
“We’re excited because our school has a performance score of B, and it was a really big deal to get there,” Kilgore said. “So now, it’s a really big deal to keep the score and possibly surpass the ranking.”

After members of Louisiana Tech’s cheer and dance teams performed, Ruston mayor Ronny Walker addressed the students.
“I’m so proud of you for what you’ve done already in your lives,” Walker said to the students. “But I’m really looking forward to what you’re going to do in the future. I can’t wait to see if you’re the next doctor, electrician, mayor or governor. Whatever you do, do it the very best you can.”
Cypress Springs fifth grade ELA and social studies teacher Catrina Crowe, who also coordinated the pep rally, said the purpose is to get the students excited for the LEAP test next week.
“We want to give them a chance to get the anxieties and worries out,” Crowe said. “Before a big, major event, it’s always a good idea to have a little fun.”
