Cedar Creek has won games in a variety of ways this season and on Thursday night the Lady Cougars relied on their defense.

Creek (18-3) held Class C power Summerfield (19-4) in check, recording a 46-32 win on the road.

“Tonight’s game was pretty physical, and I was proud of how our girls handled themselves,” said head coach Katie Hall. “We missed some early shots, but fortunately, they did too. It was great to get a win on the road against a team that is 19-4 and that has several great athletes.”

Both teams struggled to score early as Summerfield held a slim 8-7 advantage after eight minutes of action. However, the second quarter was the turning point for Cedar Creek as it outscored its opponent 13-2 to take a 20-10 lead into the halftime locker room.

Junior guard Taylor Martinez scored six of her nine points in the frame while Mary Grace Hawkins hit the first of her three-pointers on the night.

Both teams played close in the second half as the Lady Cougars pushed it’s advantage to 29-18 after the third quarter that saw senior Mallory Smith score five of her team’s nine points.

The fourth quarter saw a little more offense with the Lady Cougars outscoring Summerfield 17-14. Sophomore Alivia Lee (7) and Hawkins (6) combined for 13 of Creek’s points in the frame.

Hawkins led Creek with 11 points while Martinez and Lee each scored nine points apiece.
