Lincoln Prep’s Trey Spann and Cedar Creek’s Avery Ryan earned first team all-state honors while Cougar Jake Terry earned second team accolades on the Class A all-state squads released by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association this morning.

Spann, a 6-0 junior guard, averaged 19.8 points leading the Panthers back down to Lake Charles for yet another year. Lincoln Prep posted a 25-8 record this season and earned the No. 2 seed in Select School Division IV before eventually falling to Southern Lab in the state semifinals. The Panthers were the co-district champions of District 1-1A with Ringgold and defeated Covenant Christian and JS Clark Academy in the state playoffs.

Ryan, a 6-foot-2 junior, averaged 12.6 points and 10.3 rebounds per game for the Lady Cougars. The Benton High transfer saved some of her best games for the postseason run, including double doubles in the state semifinal and finals against JC Clark Academy and Southern Lab. She pulled down a career-high 19 boards (and 16 points) in the 47-44 win over JS Clark in the state semifinals and registered a double double in the state title game vs. Southern Lab.

Terry, a 6-foot-1 junior guard, averaged 17.0 points a contest. He helped guide Cedar Creek to a 15-10 record this season, fighting through a broken hand during the Cougars playoff run to the Elite 8 in Select School Division IV. Terry led the Cougars offensively over the final half of the season, and his 20-plus point games ignited Cedar Creek to playoff wins over Westminster Christian and Vermillion Catholic.

The Class 5A all-state teams will be announced on April 7.

LA Tech Women in the Woods program seeks to boost female participation in forestry

Courtesy of LA Tech University Communications

The Women in the Woods program, developed by Louisiana Tech University professors Dr. Heidi Adams and Dr. Nan Nan, is designed to encourage young women to explore careers in forestry through mentorship, community outreach, and hands-on learning. The initiative, supported by the USDA NIFA Women and Minorities in STEM Fields Program, has recently received a $200,000 grant.

“Our goal is to create an inclusive, supportive environment for young women interested in forestry,” said Adams. “This program offers real-world insights into the profession and inspires young women to consider forestry as a viable career path.”

A recent survey of female college students with forestry-related leadership experience found that many women do not view forestry as a potential career because they rarely see women represented in the field. Some noted that young women often perceive foresters as chainsaw-wielding individuals who “chop down trees” or “fight forest fires.” By providing experiential learning opportunities with female foresters and fostering professional relationships, the program aims to combat this stereotype and encourage more women to enter the field.

“Having strong, competent female role models is key to showing that it’s okay to be a woman in science,” said Adams.

While the Women in the Woods program is aimed at Louisiana high school girls, the School of Agricultural Sciences and Forestry at Tech has a program called WOLFS — Women of Louisiana Forestry and Supporters — a student organization that fosters professional and social connections among those pursuing careers in forestry.

The Women in the Woods program focuses on three key areas:

  1. Developing Forestry Education Resources – Creating K-12 teaching materials for Louisiana educators, including activities, worksheets, and forestry experiments.

  2. Engaging with Female Youth – Providing outreach to spark interest in outdoor careers.

  3. Hosting Annual Workshops – Organizing a free, three-day, two-night workshop for high school students to learn about forestry from professional female foresters

“We aim to inspire the next generation of women in forestry by offering them mentorship and firsthand experience,” said Nan.

The next Women in the Woods workshop will take place May 2-4, 2025. The event is open to 40 high schoolers (grades 10-12) from Louisiana. Participants will gain hands-on experience, interact with female foresters, and learn more about the forestry profession.

Interstate 20 repair in Lincoln Parish slated

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development has announced a $17.9 million project to repair over nine miles of I-20 in Lincoln Parish. Work on the project, which stretches from the Bienville Parish line to the La. Highway 149 overpass near Grambling, is scheduled to begin on Monday, March 31.

Local motorists have complained for several years about the condition of Interstate 20 in the targeted area.

On March 31, westbound I-20 will experience an outside lane closure from the Bienville Parish line to Exit 78 (Industry/LA 563).

On Tuesday, April 1, eastbound I-20 will have a lane closure in the same area. These lane closures are necessary to allow for underdrain work and improvements. Following these initial lane closures, motorists should expect ongoing intermittent lane closures in both directions to allow for construction work to progress safely and efficiently.

Drivers should anticipate some delays, particularly during peak travel times. The overall project involves roadway grading, drainage improvements, full-depth repairs to address the roadway base, milling to remove the old asphalt, and application of new asphalt to repair the driving surface as well as the subsurface layers.

The old asphalt on the ramps at the La. 507 and La. 563 interchanges will also be removed and replaced. Because this project is taking place on an interstate with high traffic volumes, a queue detection system is being implemented to inform motorists in real-time of changing traffic conditions on the roadway. This queue detection system involves the use of portable digital message boards placed at strategic points ahead of the work zone that display messages based on the current travel conditions, such as prompting motorists to use an alternate route or expect delays.

Emergency vehicles will have access during construction, but may encounter some travel delays, and should consider mapping out alternative routes.

The entire project is anticipated to conclude in Summer 2026, with progress dependent on weather conditions and other factors that impact construction timelines. DOTD said investing in roadway improvements like this is a crucial aspect of fostering economic development and enhancing the driving experience for both residents and visitors.

DOTD appreciates your patience and reminds you to please drive with caution through the construction site and be on the lookout for work crews and their equipment. Remember to leave plenty of room between you and the vehicle in front of you.

Allegiance asks LPPJ to again pass tax on NLMC

Pictured is Allegiance Health Management attorney Nicole Frey talking to the LPPJ earlier this month. (Photo by T. Scott Boatright)

By T. Scott Boatright

During this month’s Lincoln Parish Police Jury meeting, representatives from Allegiance Health Management representatives requested the LPPJ to once again consider passing a new tax on the hospital that would unlock additional Medicaid funding.

The LPPJ could not vote on the matter during that meeting because it was not on the agenda for that meeting, but the LPPJ is expected to consider that request as an agenda item for the Jury’s April meeting.

Should the LPPJ agree to that request in April, it will proceed with the public notice process needed in order to pass the hospital tax during its May meeting.

Allegiance Health Management is hoping that move could result in higher federal reimbursements for treating patients on Medicaid.

The LPPJ passed such a new tax in 2022 before Gov. John Bel Edwards vetoed the proposed state law that would have allowed the process to occur.

But the proposed tax was brought up again and passed during last year’s state legislative session, prompting Allegiance to ask the LPPJ to pass the tax request again.

What it all means is that the parish would levy what is basically an occupational license tax on Northern Louisiana Medical Center (NLMC.

The hospital would pay the tax with the LPPJ and Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office would each receive parts of those proceeds with the remainder being moved into the state Medicaid program, where it would help the state receive a larger reimbursement from the federal government with that additional funding then being passed back to NLMC.

NLMC CEO Kathy Hall said during this month’s LPPJ meeting that the tax will end up allowing the hospital and its providers to treat patients who are on Medicaid without losing money in the process.

“We do serve a lot of Medicaid patients in our population, and our responsibility is to take care of everyone in our community,” Hall said. “But you bring a doctor in, they see a Medicaid patient, and their reimbursement is $38 to $40. And it costs more than $38 to see a patient by the time you employ staff.

“So, this supplemental funding helps to close that gap for the providers to make sure we can pay these providers what they deserve to be paid.”

Allegiance Attorney Nicole Frey said during the LPPJ meeting earlier this month that the tax would bring no new costs to parish taxpayers or NLMC patients.

“The hospital cannot add a supplemental fee or charge to the patient bill to pay for (the tax),” Frey said.

Frey said the need for the tax is because Medicaid is what she called “so woefully underfunded” that every time a hospital performs care on a Medicaid patient, it loses money.

“The state is maxed out, but the parish’s have to step up and help, which is why this law was written,” Frey said.

Frey said that if Allegiance’s tax request is passed, a working committee would be created.

“We form a committee under LDH (the Louisiana Department of Hospitals) and will crunch and bring back the numbers and then the committee would meet again and under resolution would pass the (tax) rate. The Sheriff is the collector and will collect the assessment, take off their fee, turn over the money to the parish with the money going into a dedicated checking account, and then by an inter-government transfer agreement with LDH, the parish will send the money to the LDH.

“I know it sounds strange that the hospital wants to pay this assessment, but the assessment goes into the Medicaid program and the state’s share of funding Medicaid is roughly 27 to 37 cents (on the dollar). The federal government pays the rest. So, this is a funding mechanism to draw down more federal money that comes back to (NLMC) to help it counter its costs.”

According to the Medicaid and CHIP Payment and Access Commission (MACPAC), health care-related taxes have become a more common funding source for state Medicaid programs over the past 15 years.

MACPAC reports that in the state fiscal year (SFY) 2019, 49 states and the District of Columbia imposed at least one health care-related tax, up from 35 states in SFY 2004. In SFY 2019, the most common health care related taxes were levied on institutional providers, with 45 states imposing at least one tax on nursing facilities, 43 states imposing hospital taxes, and 35 states imposing taxes on intermediate care facilities for individuals with intellectual disabilities

Man charged after disrupting church service

A man who disrupted a church service in Grambling last Sunday was arrested for disturbing the peace and trespassing.

Joshua K. White, 25, of Ruston, was taken in custody after Grambling Police responded to a 911 call at the Grambling church on March 23.

A church staffer said White was disrupting the service and refused to remain peaceful or leave. An officer spoke with White who became upset, saying he was recording the officer and was going to call his lawyer.

The church staffer said White had disrupted a family funeral hour about two weeks earlier and was told to leave and not to return.

White was arrested for disturbing the peace and remaining on premises after being forbidden (trespassing). He was booked at the Lincoln Parish Detention Center.

Choudrant’s Boggs signs to play collegiately

By Kyle Roberts

CHOUDRANT, La. — Choudrant High senior pitcher Emma Boggs held a signing ceremony Friday afternoon where the softballer signed to go play for Lyon College in Batesville, Ark.

Boggs was surrounded by coaches, students, and family when she signed her commitment to play for the Scots.

“This has been the first year I’ve coached Emma, and she’s a phenomenal softball player,” Choudrant softball coach Stacey Tassin said. “She’s had to step up into a role that she was not used to really doing a whole lot, which is pitching. She’s put a few games in for us and done well. Whatever I ask her to do, she does it, and that means a lot.”

After an introduction by Ryan Smith, Choudrant boys’ basketball coach and athletics director, Boggs thanked everyone for coming. She said she chose Lyon College so she can go into nursing and work in labor and delivery.

“It meant so much to have everyone come out and support me,” Boggs said. “It’s always been a dream to play college softball. So I feel very blessed to be able to continue my dream. (I chose Lyon College) because the atmosphere and people are amazing. The school is small, and the coaches are just awesome. I loved everything about it.”

Arcadia man charged in two separate cases

A Ruston woman reported the father of their child forced his way into her home and grabbed her by the neck during an incident last week.

Latario T. Davis, 26, of Arcadia, was arrested March 21 by Ruston Police after he left the woman’s residence.

According to an officer’s report, Davis went to the victim’s home with a firearm. The woman said Davis dropped off their 3-year-old child and when she attempted to close the door, he forced his hand in and grabbed her around the neck. She was able to get away and call police.

An officer saw marks on the woman’s neck.

Police spotted Davis’s red Ford Mustang from the woman’s description. He was stopped on Tech Drive about 2:15 a.m. and arrested. A Glock pistol was found inside the vehicle.

Davis was booked for home invasion and violation of a protective order in connection with the incident as well as for armed robbery and aggravated assault with a firearm from a 2024 case investigated by RPD. His bail was set at $575,000.

Techsters face Illinois State in Great 8 of WNIT

The Louisiana Tech women’s basketball team travels to Norman, Illinois, to take on Illinois State in the Great 8 of the WNIT tonight in the CEFCU Arena on ESPN+.

Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. and the game can be heard on 97.7 FM with Kyle Roberts providing a call of the action. Tech leads the all-time series 5-3, although Illinois State is 1-0 against the Lady Techsters in the WNIT.

“We are excited to be playing on March 31,” said head coach Brooke Stoehr. “We are playing meaningful games in late March, and it’s an opportunity for this group to continue to compete together and try to win a championship. Now you get a chance to go on the road and play a very good opponent in Illinois State.”

Louisiana Tech (17-15) used a dominant third quarter to erase a 10-point halftime deficit to beat Lindenwood 68-64. Paris Bradley scored 12 of her game-high 12 points, and Isla Airey had five blocks in the third quarter for the Lady Techsters.

Airey’s presence down low as a shot blocker has not been seen by a Lady Techster in 17 seasons. The 6-4 forward had seven blocks against the Lions, tying her with Tori Harrison and Margaret DeCiman for the fourth most in a single game in program history. Her 60 rejections on the year rank 10th overall and third among Lady Techster freshmen.

Another freshman etching her name in the record book is Paris Bradley. The 5-9 guard’s eight 20-point performances are the sixth most by a freshman in Lady Techster history, only trailing Belinda Jones (14), Pam Kelly (14), Kay Ford (11), Angela Turner (10) and Elinor Griffin (9). She also ranks eighth in total points (471), 10th in assists (98) and third in 3-pointers (45).

Illinois State (23-12) comes into the game off a 78-68 win over Abilene Christian in the Super 16. The Redbirds shot 52.9 percent from the field and 55.6 percent from behind the arc.

“They are very good offensively,” said Stoehr. “They are efficient. They are well balanced. They can score on the perimeter. They can score on the interior. They make you work really hard. Defensively, we are going to have to be very solid because they can score at each position.”

Illinois State is the sixth-best shooting team in the country at 48.2 percent. They have shot under 40 percent just six times in 35 games and have shot over 50 on 17 occasions, including the previous two games. Their 3-point percentage ranks ninth in the country at 37.5 percent.

Shannon Dowell leads the way for the Redbirds with 17.3 points per game on 48.9 percent shooting. The sophomore guard has 12 games of 20 or more points, including the last five. The second-team All-Missouri Valley Conference member adds 5.5 rebounds and 2.1 assists a game.

Gold beats Black in GSU spring game

by T. Scott Boatright

Grambling State football coach Mikey Joseph means business as he looks to ground and pound opposing defenses into submission.

But Joseph also knows you also to keep those defenses off balance with a little passing to help establish the run.

It was the Gold team that took care of business best Saturday afternoon as it blanked the Black team 21-0 in GSU’s Annual Spring Game at Eddie G. Robinson Memorial Stadium.

The Gold team started strong, with quarterback C’Zavian Teasett connecting with Keith Jones on a 21-yard scoring strike that put their team on top 7-0 at the 5:09 mark of the opening stanza.

That would be the only score of the first half as GSU coach Mickey Joseph didn’t have his Tigers do anything fancy on the offensive side of the ball, opting to keep things basic and focus on player evaluation.

“We stayed in open sets and tried to keep it vanilla,” Joseph said. “We were just kinda looking at assignments first — make sure you do your assignment, and then we wanted to see you compete. And I thought I saw some good things. I’m sure after watching film we’ll find some things we need to clean up.

“As you can see, we’re investing into running the football,” Joseph said. “I think we have some good young backs. I think we have some good young receivers, but the first thing we’re going to do is we’re going to run it to throw it and then throw it when we need to.”

Phillips had the longest run of the first half with a 16-yard scamper while Eaton had the longest run of the contest as he raced around right end and sprinted 57 yards down the sideline for the Gold team’s final touchdown with 8:51 remaining in the game.

Grambling’s running back corps is led by graduate student Dedrick Talbert, who was joined by Tony Phillips and Clyde McClendon handling running duties for the Black squad while Byron Eaton Jr., Andre Crews and Roderick McCrary handled the ball-toted duties for Team Gold.”

“Talbert is the senior in the group and has been around a while — he got an extra year with the junior college rule, so he came back,” Joseph said. “He didn’t have to come back, but that’s a credit to our coaching staff that he came back. So he’s our leader, our banger. Then you have Eaton, a young kid, and Tony Phillips and Crews — kids that are home run hitters. Then you have McClendon, another banger like Talbert but he’s a redshirt freshman.

“So we’ve got three or four redshirt freshmen back there. We’ve got to get them better in protection. We know when we give them the ball, they see it. They just have to trust their vision. And we have McCurdy. Rod had a good day running the ball, and Rod’s the fifth back, but that doesn’t mean anything in this offense because there might be a game where you play five backs to keep their legs fresh. At Nebraska we played five running backs a game, because that’s how you’re going to keep them fresh if you’re going to bang them.”

Joseph credited the play of his offensive line, under the guidance of new OL coach Erik Losey, who has reclaimed the same role he played at GSU from 2014-21, for their efforts in the Spring Game.

“I think Losey coming in as the offensive line coach, he’s doing a real good job with them,” Joseph said. “They’re doing some different things up front. They understand that. An offensive lineman loves to hear that we’re going to run the football. They really don’t want to hear that you’re going to throw the football. They’d rather go forward than backwards. That’s anybody. I’d rather go forward. They understand and are buying into it. They’re really better run blockers than pass blockers. I think that goes for a lot of kids in this league. So we’re going to play to their strength. We’re going to test the A and B gap and we’re going to see what they can do.”

Teasett had the best day out of Grambling’s quarterbacks, adding a second touchdown with 11:50 left on the scoreboard as he hit Nick Howard on a 24-yard scoring pass to put the Gold team on top 14-0.

Ashton Frye and Jerome Stewart also each took snaps playing quarterback for the Gold team while Ty Keyes and Tyler Turner were the Black team QBs.

“First of all, I think (quarterbacks) Coach (Shyrone) Carey is doing a great job with them,” Joseph said. “He’s being real detailed with them and they know where to go with the ball. That’s the big thing for me, because with quarterbacks, taking care of the football and making good decisions goes hand in hand. I think Coach Carrier’s done a good job with them. I thought Frye was solid this spring along with Teasettt and Keyes. I thought Tyler came along also.

Despite Teasett’s performance, Joseph wasn’t ready to talk about a starting quarterback after the Spring game was over.

“We still have a way to go at that position,” Joseph said. “You want to pick a starter. And we’ll meet on Monday and figure out if we need to pick a starter. I’m in no hurry. I’m in no hurry to pick a starter because I think you still have to have two going into the season that can play. I think that if you have two, you have one. If you have one, you have none. But if we have three, we have two. So we’ve got to think along those lines. I thought they all did a good job this spring of catching on to the offense that I want, and we’re going to go from there, because at the end of the day, the offensive play call is going to come out of my mouth. Jerome did a good job of being on the same page that I would be on.”

One thing Joseph said he did like in the Spring Game was the way the Gold team took care of business.

“I like the way the Gold team finished,” Joseph said. “They pulled away with it. When it’s 7-0 and you get an opportunity to make it 14-0. Then you get another big run and make it 21-0. And you’re smart — you’re smart with the clock. That’s how you get them off the field. We’re going to play complementary football this year. But the first thing we’re going to do is run it.”

ICYMI: Smith headlines Lincoln Parish players on Class B all-state team

Trumarion Smith (photo by Josh McDaniel)

by Malcolm Butler

Four Lincoln Parish basketball players earned Class B all-state honors from the Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA) released by the organization today.

Simsboro’s Trumarion Smith earned first team all-state accolades on the boys side while teammate Ahmad Smith and Choudrant’s Carson Carrico were both named all-state honorable mention.

The lone Lincoln Parish representative on the girl’s all-state team was Choudrant’s Reese Brown, who was named honorable mention.

Trumarion Smith, the 2025 all-Lincoln Parish Journal MVP, earned first team honors after leading Simsboro to Marsh Madness where the Tigers lost to eventual state champion Lacassine 71-64, providing the Cardinals there only real test during their title run. He averaged 17.5 points, 5.3 assists and 5.2 rebounds per game for the Tigers and was the heart and soul of this year’s Simsboro team.

Ahmad Smith was another key component of the Tigers run to the Final Four of the Class B state tournament this season, averaging around 15.0 points per contest. Night after night, Smith scored in double figures for Simsboro while also providing stat stuffing numbers on both ends of the floor that helped the Tigers win 22 games.

Carrico, an all-LPJ team honoree and the District 2B MVP, earned his spot on the honorable mention list after averaging 20.0 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.6 steals per game for Choudrant and proved to be a tough defensive assignment for opposing teams in 2024-25. His three-point shooting ability and tenacity on the floor were a big reason the Aggies were able to capture the District 2B title this season with an undefeated mark in league play.

Brown was awarded for her outstanding season after averaging 11.6 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.8 steals and 2.0 assists in leading the Lady Aggies to wins in seven of their final 10 games of the season. An all-LPJ team honoree, Brown guided Choudrant to the District 2B title and a spot in the state playoffs.

LA Tech Athletics Weekend Roundup

The Bulldogs (17-11, 4-2 CUSA) clinched their third-straight weekend series and second-straight Conference USA series after defeating Kennesaw State (11-17, 3-3 CUSA) with ease in a 9-2 Sunday afternoon victory at the Love Shack.

Tech dropped game one of the series 6-1 before coming back and winning these second game Saturday by a score of 7-3.

“I’m extremely proud of our guys finding a way to win this series,” said head coach Lane Burroughs. “I challenged them yesterday after Game 1 in the dugout, said I was tired of people coming in here and pushing us around and they answered the bell in Game 2 and again today.”

On Sunday, freshman Brooks Roberson retired the first seven Owls at the plate, Kennesaw State drew a pair of walks, hit into a fielder’s choice and knocked in a run on a base hit to strike first for a 1-0 lead through three innings. After leaving the bases loaded without allowing run in the top half, the Bulldogs put two across to take the lead over the Owls in the fourth.

Garrison Berkley and Michael Ballard started the frame with a double and a single before Eli Berch slapped a two-out knock through the left side of the Owls infield to even the score. After Trey Hawsey drew a walk to load the bases, Ballard came across to score via wild pitch from the Kennesaw State pitcher and give the ‘Dogs a 2-1 lead heading into the fifth. Tech would add five runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth and never look back in the win.

Roberson earned his third win of the year to improve his record to 3-1 on the mound. Three of Forsythe’s four outs recorded came as a strikeout, followed by Landon Fontenot tossing 2 2/3 innings of perfect baseball with a pair of strikeouts to close the game.

In the Game 2 win, Luke Cooley dominated, tossing eight scoreless frames before allowing two unearned runs in the ninth. He recorded 10 strikeouts, which is the most by a Bulldog since Ryan Jennings struck out 10 against Old Dominion on May 26, 2022. He also tossed the most scoreless innings since Cade Gibson tossed eight no-run frames against FIU on March 26, 2022.

“Luke told us in the sixth inning he was tired,” said Burroughs. “I just thought the swings he was getting-you can’t take him out. He’s getting outs and he wanted it. Unfortunately, the young man got on, and even on that it wasn’t a good swing. You have to do right by the kid, he’s got a lot of ball left to play in front of him and you can’t leave him out there to die. But I tip my hat to him, that was the ultimate gem right there.”

The Bulldogs look to start a five-game slate in the upcoming week, starting with midweek road tests against LSU in Baton Rouge on Tuesday and UL-Lafayette on Wednesday. First pitch against the Tigers is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT at Alex Box Stadium.

Softball

Louisiana Tech softball split its double header with Western Kentucky on Saturday afternoon as the Bulldogs won game one 8-4 before falling 5-2 to the Hilltoppers in the series finale. Tech lost Friday’s opener 8-0.

LA Tech moves to 21-13 (8-4 CUSA) after going 1-2 against WKU in the series and sits in a three-way tie for second place in the league.

I’m disappointed in losing the series and I know our players are too, but at the same time I am proud of their fight,” said head coach Josh Taylor.  “There were windy conditions and it’s not a controllable, but I am just proud of their fight. At 8-4 right now in conference, we’re right where we want to be. We are just going to have to finish strong down the stretch.”

On Saturday, Redshirt sophomore first baseman Reagan Marchant had a career day at the dish as she hit three home runs on the day with two coming in the first game, followed by one more in game two. She finished the day with four hits and five RBI across the two games.

Alexis Gilio joined Marchant with four hits as she collected two base knocks in both games today. Allie Furr had three hits in game one, while Nicole Hammoude posted four RBI in game one after hitting a go-ahead grand slam with two outs in the top of the sixth.

Allie Floyd earned the win in relief in game one and moves to 16-6 on the season after logging 4.0 innings of work while allowing one run on six hits to pair with three strikeouts.

Alyssa Martin took the loss in game two and moves to 1-3 on the season after allowing four runs on three hits in 2.1 innings of action.

The Bulldogs will be back in action on Wednesday evening as they travel to Lafayette to take on ULL. The first pitch from Yvette Girouard Field at Lamson Park is set for 6:00 p.m.

Tennis

Louisiana Tech was one point away from clinching its first ever win over in-state foe Tulane, but the Bulldogs ended up dropping a 4-3 heartbreak to the Green Wave on Sunday at the City Park Tennis Center.

LA Tech (12-8) grabbed the doubles point and got two quick singles wins, but Tulane (10-9), who has been ranked as high as No. 61 in the country, won four singles matches to pull off the comeback.

The Bulldogs got off to a 1-0 start thanks to a pair of doubles wins on courts one and three. Ana Rodrigues and Zoie Epps teamed up to defeat the pairing of Campbell Ricci and Leigh Van Zyl 6-4 at the No. 1 spot. Then there was the duo of Mio Kozaki and Nina Skoric who bested Natalia Fantini and Jiayun Zhu 6-2 at No. 3.

The Green Wave evened the match up at 1-1 following a straight-sets win on court five. However, Epps and Kozaki both dominated by exact scores of 6-2, 6-1 to give the Bulldogs a 3-1 advantage, needing just one point to take the victory.

For Epps, it was overpowering effort versus Summer Chandler at No. 2 for her seventh straight victory and team-leading 18th victory overall this spring. For Kozaki, it was arguably her best effort of the spring cruising to a win over Micah Pierce at No. 4, this after her last seven matches went unfinished.

Tulane stormed back though, getting wins on courts one, three, and six to edge out LA Tech.

Baseball

The Grambling State University baseball team fell to Jackson State 6-4 on Sunday afternoon at Braddy Field.

The Tigers won Friday’s opener 8-1 before falling 6-3 in the second game of the series. Grambling State fell to 10-16 overall and 6-3 in the SWAC while Jackson State improved to 16-10 and 4-5 in conference.

On Sunday, GSU held a 4-2 lead in the sixth, but four unanswered JSU runs were too much to overcome.

Both teams hit the ball well, racking up 12 hits apiece. Four G-Men put together multi-hit games with Martavious Thomas going 2-for-4, Chenar Brown going 2-for-2, Nyan Hayes for 2-for-2 with a triple and an RBI and Shannon Martin going 2-for-4 with a double.

GSU starting pitcher Randy Reyes kept scoring limited, surrendering two runs on nine hits. He struck out five and walked two.

Taylor Dooley (0-1) was charged with a loss after entering in the eighth inning and allowing one run on one hit.

Trailing 1-0 in the top of the fifth, with two outs and runners on first and second, Grambling State’s Jaylyn Bennet ripped an RBI single through the left side of the infield to knot the game up 1-1.

After Reyes struck out JSU’s first two batters in the bottom of the fifth, a double by Joseph Eichelberger put runners in scoring position. Following a pair of hit batters, a bases loaded walk put JSU back in front 2-1.

Aries Gardner led the top of the sixth with a leadoff walk. An errant throw on a failed pickoff attempt by Jackson State pitcher Erick Gonzalez allowed pinch runner Lamarcus Jones, who entered for Gardner, to advance to second. Hayes brought him around to score with a triple smacked to deep centerfield.

Hayes eventually scored on a wild pitch, giving GSU its first lead of the day at 3-2. With runners on second and third, Trey Bridges extended Grambling State’s lead with an RBI single to make it 4-2 in the sixth.

After a pair of GSU pitching changes in the bottom of the frame that saw Trenton Shaw and Derrell Fletcher take the mound, JSU scored two runs to tie the game back up at 4-4.

Hampton Phillips came in to pitch in the bottom of the seventh. After GSU catcher Chris Marcellus threw out a JSU runner attempting to steal second, Phillips closed the inning with a strikeout of Jackson State’s Anthony Brown.

The G-Men had a prime scoring opportunity with one out and the bases loaded in the top of the eighth, but an inning ending double play ended the threat.

Jackson State took the lead for good with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame.  JSU reliever Stevins Spurgeon (2-0) picked up the win. He pitched three innings, giving up no runs on five hits.

Parish, state leaders discuss potential local juvenile justice district

By T. Scott Boatright

GRAMBLING — The potential creation of a Juvenile Justice District for Lincoln Parish was the topic of discussion during a meeting organized by Lincoln Parish Police Jury Vice President Greg “Big Coach” Williams that was held at the Eddie G. Robinson Museum.

In Louisiana, a “Juvenile Justice District” refers to a specific geographic area or group of parishes that the state’s juvenile justice system operates within, often encompassing a judicial district, and is responsible for handling cases involving children under 18 who are alleged to have committed delinquent acts or are in need of care.

Williams, Parish Administrator Courtney Hall, Assistant Parish Administrator Kevin Kelpzig, Parish Treasurer Michael Sutton and LPPJ members Dan Lord, Milton Melton and Logan Hunt were joined by state Sen. Gerald Long, Grambling Mayor Alvin Bradley, Boys and Girls Clubs of North Louisiana CEO Eldonta Osborne, Louisiana Office of Juvenile Justice Deputy Sec. Kenneth Loftin, Office of Juvenile Justice Deputy Assistant Secretary Deron Patin, Lincoln Parish School Board Vice President Dannielle Williams and LPSB members David Ferguson and George Mack were among others attending the meeting.

The meeting started with a discussion of potentially developing a building on land now known as Grambling State University’s West Campus to use for working with troubled youth, but Greg Williams was quick to stress that any such building would not be used for holding purposes but instead a facility used for intervention, diversion and prevention.

“This is just a preliminary meeting to talk about the issue and how we can try to deal with it here in Lincoln Parish,” Greg Williams said. “And will hopefully begin with the creation of a juvenile justice district here in Lincoln Parish.

“But this is not about incarcerating. We don’t want to do that. What we want to do is intervention — stop problems before they get bad enough before incarceration even has to be considered. We want to reach our troubled young people and get them back on the right track before that ever becomes necessary.”

One thing that those attending brought out of the meeting was a feeling that state governmental leaders are supportive of the fledgling initiative here in Lincoln Parish.

“Gov. (Jeff) Landry is committed to juvenile justice in the state of Louisiana,” Loftin said as he addressed the group. “He’s put dollars there. The legislature has put dollars there. This time they put up $90M in state budget to build facilities across the state.

“It’s my understanding that y’all want to do something on the front end of that, which is a great thing to do. Lincoln Parish has needed a facility for a number of years. Probably 15 years ago I came to talk to the sheriff about it. Y’all need something, you do. But it’s great to start with (a diversion) program. We can help you with that. There are a couple of programs in the state that are doing a great job.”

Loftin encouraged Lincoln Parish leaders to visit those programs and learn what they can learn and apply to the situation here in Lincoln Parish.

“We’ll offer any help that we can,” Loftin said. “Some of it may be financial to get y’all going. Y’all have some great buildings in that picture (GSU’s West Campus). Those are a lot of buildings that you can do the diversion program with, and that’s going to have to happen.”

State Rep. Rashid Young talked to the group virtually and said the Lincoln Parish project had been discussed within state leadership.

“Part of the reason for that is because we found out Lincoln Parish is one of the few in the state without a juvenile justice district,” Young said. “The language there — juvenile justice name — may be something we tweak throughout the process. We’re just in the beginning stages of the process, but what we’re trying to do with legislation is trying to create a commission that could be legislatively-created that could operate the facility and programming we’re trying to do.

“We modeled the legislation off a piece of recent legislation that was created in Tangipahoa Parish. In their legislation, they appointed all stakeholders across their parish onto this commission and they make decisions about their juvenile justice facility. That’s folks from your judges office, folks from your D.A.’s Office, folks from the Sheriff’s Office, folks from the school system and police jurors. We’ll be talking with locals about who should be a part of that commission.”

Young said creating that local commission would open the opportunity to enter into contracts for leasing land, apply for federal and state grants and appropriations as well as doing construction if needed.

“It’s an ongoing process,” Young said. “If there were four stages to doing this legislation, we’re not even at Stage 1 yet. So, it’s going to be an ongoing conversation between your legislative delegation as well as your locals.”

Young said getting state legislation passed that would open the door to create a Lincoln Parish juvenile justice commission will be the first step in that process.

“It’s a non-taxing legislation — that’s something important to clear up,” Young said. “This will not give us the ability to levy any taxes at all. But you would have a legislatively-created political subdivision that would have a board of commissioners that would allow you to start conversations about funding, whether it’s from the Louisiana Office of Juvenile Justice, receiving a legislative appropriation, entering into a lease agreement with the state or whatever, that commission could be created by the end of the upcoming (state) legislative session.”

Louisiana Tech finds productive use for harmful weeds

Courtesy of LA Tech University Communications

In Louisiana Tech University’s College of Engineering and Science, Dr. Muhammad Aamir Iqbal, a Fulbright Fellowship recipient, has completed a study aimed at identifying harmful weeds found in Louisiana. This research, studied in Dr. Joan Lynam’s Biomass Research Lab, converts the weeds into useful products using eco-friendly methods to break down the plants.

“Joining the biomass team is an incredible opportunity to address one of the most pressing challenges for developing novel techniques to transform weeds into marketable products,” Iqbal said. “Noxious weeds pose serious challenges to modern farming systems, and extensive use of herbicides for managing weeds has emerged as one of the biggest sources of environmental deterioration and ecosystem malfunctioning.”

Iqbal identified several common weeds in Louisiana, such as pigweed, alligator weed, Chinese tallow, and parthenium. These weeds spread quickly and impair a crop’s efficiency, affecting the economic productivity. They tend to have better survival traits compared to crops and significantly reduce crop productivity and quality even after applying herbicides.

Iqbal used chemical engineering methods, specifically hydrothermal carbonization, which combines heat and pressure to remove water and increase the carbon content of weed samples, making them energy efficient. This process focuses on converting weeds into carbon-rich materials by applying controlled heat and pressure along with eco-friendly solvents.

“I am delighted to host Dr. Iqbal at Louisiana Tech,” Lynam said. “His approach to transforming weeds into organic amendment can address weed management and herbicides associated environmental challenges in the long run.”

“Transforming waste, such as weeds, into marketable and sustainable products will contribute to a greener and cleaner world,” Mohammad Tarikuzzaman, Ph.D. student with the Biomass Research Lab, added. “This is a fulfilling project proposed by Dr. Iqbal with profound and wide-reaching effects, and we aspire to create a meaningful impact on the health of the environment.”

This project exemplifies Louisiana Tech’s dedication to tackling global environmental challenges through innovative research and collaboration.

Man discards marijuana in patrol car after arrest

A man arrested by Louisiana Tech Police on several warrants left marijuana scattered on a patrol car seat after his arrest.

Ronald R. Russell, Jr., 43, of Ruston, was stopped for an inoperable headlight on the Tech campus at about 11:45 p.m. on March 23. A records check showed Russell was wanted on warrants from Ruston City Court and Winnfield City Court. He also did no have a driver’s license.

Russell was arrested and checked for weapons. He told an officer he had no contraband on him.

The officer removed some equipment from the back seat and confirmed it was clean before placing Russell in the patrol car. When Russell was removed at the Lincoln Parish Detention Center, suspected marijuana was found scattered across the seat.

Russell was booked for possession of marijuana, no headlight, no driver’s license, and the warrants from Ruston and Winnfield. Bail on the charges related to the stop was set at $2,000.

This week in Lincoln Parish Schools

The Lincoln Parish Journal is providing our local schools with an opportunity to submit nuggets from what’s going on at their respective schools in order to get more information out on their students, faculty and staff. The information below comes directly from those schools. Any school wishing to provide content each week can email at hannalsingh@gmail.com

Middle Schools

A.E. Phillips Middle School

Our 7th grade students enjoyed a fast paced and activity packed South Louisiana trip the week before Spring Break.  Mrs. Kelly, our Assistant Director of Middle School, did a fantastic job of planning this trip for our students, making sure they experienced our great state of Louisiana to the fullest.  Some fun activities included a visit to the World War II Museum, Mardi Gras World, and an airboat ride through the swamps, among many other stops along the way.  A special thanks to our middle school teachers for joining in on the fun as chaperones.

The 3rd nine weeks Journalism class visited the Ruston Daily Leader this week to tour the facility and to meet the amazing staff and hard-working writers, editors, & graphic design team.  Our students come away from this field trip with a better understanding of how a newspaper is built from the ground up.

Elementary Schools

A. E. Phillips Elementary

Our 3rd grade students held their first ever “STEM Program”.  The students, under the direction of their fabulous teachers Ms. Smith and Mrs. Walsworth, learned STEM related songs and learned about STEM related professions they might want to pursue in the future.  Each third grader chose a future job they might like to have and shared that with the audience.  They did a fantastic job!

Just before Spring Break our first graders put on a wonderful play called “Pajama Party”.  Music resident, Rebekah Heiden took the lead on this production and did a great job teaching these students their song and super cute motions to go with them.  This was a sweet program enjoyed by all in attendance.

Dubach

April 8 Dubach will host an Open House for students entering PreK for the 2025-2026 school year from 5-6pm. We are looking forward to meeting our future PreK students and any other students who will be new to Dubach Elementary School in the 2025-2026 school year.

April 10, we will host our Family Numeracy Night. We are looking forward to all of our current families coming out to enjoy this great event.

Mark your calendars for our 11th annual Art Show, May 12, 2025.

Lincoln Parish Early Childhood Center

Our staff is so awesome we have TWO employees of the month!

Our first March Employee of the Month is Ms. Erica. Her nominators had this to say about her: “She is wonderful with the students. Willing to do anything for anyone.” “ She is always smiling and willing to help with anything.”

Our second March Employee of the Month is Mrs. Melissa. Her nominators had this to say about her: “She has so many children on her roster and she does a great job servicing all of them. “She’s always willing to help and offer advice in order to help our students.

Simsboro

Elementary students of Simsboro School rocked February’s Heart Healthy month by participating in life saving CPR, drinking more water, exercising outdoors, getting plenty of rest, and eating their fruits and vegetables. They also learned how to monitor their own heart rate. Simsboro students not only met our goal of $5,001 for our annual American Heart Association Kids Heart Challenge fundraiser, but they absolutely crushed it! They raised $8,216.21 to help kids with heart problems and in need of hospitalizations for the AHA organization.

Mrs. DeVille’s first grade class came in first in the coin drive raising $355 dollars. Mrs. Bonnett’s first grade class came in first place for our PK-2nd competition overall  raising money for kids in need. They brought in $1,500! Mrs. Moore’s third grade class came in first place for our 3rd-5th grade overall competition raising $1,700 for the American Heart Association! Since these awesome students not only beat their goal, but surpassed it by a great amount, our fearless leader, Ms. Crane upheld her end of the deal! She was duct taped to the wall and was such a great sport! The kids had a blast learning about heart healthy habits all month long and we celebrated on February 28th participating in our BIG EVENT with heart healthy snacks and games! Way to go, Simsboro students!!
