Armed Ruston man arrested at domestic incident

A man wanted for skipping court was arrested in Ruston last week after police responded to a domestic incident.

Ruston Police responded to a domestic disturbance on Groveland Avenue in southwest Ruston on April 23. James Tyrone Cooper, 61, was allegedly involved in a fight with a woman. Responding officers found Cooper standing over the woman and yelling at her.

A witness told police Cooper and the woman were involved in an argument. Cooper reportedly fell to the ground and discharged a firearm at the woman.

After Cooper was arrested, an officer found a Taurus G2C 9mm pistol on him.

Cooper told the officer that he had not fired the gun, and it was only a verbal argument.

A records check showed three arrest warrants on Cooper for failure to appear in Ruston City Court.

Cooper was booked at the Lincoln Parish Detention Center for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, illegal discharge of a weapon, domestic abuse aggravated assault, disturbing the peace, and the three warrants.
