Four Bulldogs shot under par, anchored by Morton Bailey’s 67, as Louisiana Tech closed out the second round of the Argent Financial Classic on Monday.
Bailey’s five under tied for the second lowest round of the day, helping LA Tech shoot five shots better to card a 283 (-5) to put them in a tie for ninth going into the third and final round on Tuesday at Squire Creek Country Club.
“It is always good to shoot five shots better,” said head coach Matt Terry. “Happy for the guys, getting their first round under par under their belt. Still a little bit of sloppiness that led to some bogeys. If we can take advantage of a few more opportunities tomorrow, I like our chances to play even better. Proud of the guys’ effort and attitude.”
It was a bounce back day for Bailey who last six over in round one. The sophomore opened his round with seven straight pars before sinking a birdie on the Par 5 No. 17. Bailey then tore up the front nine with a 32 (five birdies) to shoot a career-best 67.
Chase Williams had a near bogey-free round, shooting two under (70). The transfer had an identical scorecard to Bailey on the back nine with eight pars and a birdie on the Par 5 No. 17. Back-to-back birdies to start the front helped the junior get to -2 for his round and for the tournament, putting him in a tie for 24th.
Isaac Adams and Riley Hnatyshyn both shot one over (73). Adams overcame an early double bogey, putting the sophomore at Even par for the tournament and in a tie for 40th. Meanwhile, Hnatyshyn played steady golf with 15 pars, two bogeys, and one birdie.
Among the individuals, Gray Kingrea was the top Bulldog shooting three under (69). The junior once again found success on the back nine, shooting 33 with five birdies made. Seth Campbell was right behind him with a 70 (-2), making birdies on all four Par 5s.
Kingrea is also in a tie for 24th with teammate Williams as well as Oskari Schuvalow who shot two over (74) following his team-best 68 from round one.
South Alabama separated itself from the pack, shooting nine under to put the Jaguars at 15 under with a five-shot lead going into round three. The next nine teams are within five shots of each other.
