The Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office has announced one of its beloved patrol dogs died Sunday.
In a statement, LPSO said, “It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of K-9 Nela, a 4-year-old Belgian Malinois who faithfully served the Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office since 2022.”
Sheriff Stephen Williams said Nela was a dual purpose K-9. She passed away unexpectedly, probably from an aneurism.
“Nela was very talented finding narcotics as well as tracking fugitives,” Williams said.
Deputy Stephen Carr was Nela’s handler. Williams said Carr would be allowed several weeks to process Nela’s death before seeing if he wanted to continue to be a K-9 officer.
“Her service, loyalty, and courage will never be forgotten,” the statement said. “Our thoughts are with Deputy Carr and all who had the privilege of working alongside her.”
Williams said LPSO has two other K-9s, Thor and Zino.
