Letter to the Editor: Your vote is your voice

Voting is more than a civic responsibility; it is one of the most powerful rights we have as citizens. Every registered voter has a voice, and every voice deserves to be heard.

The Ruston Voters League encourages every registered voter to exercise their right to vote in the  November 3rd election.  Do not assume that your vote does not matter. Elections determine who will represent us and influence decisions that affect our families, schools, communities, economy, healthcare, public safety, and quality of life.

Early voting begins October 20 and continues through October 27.  You can vote before Election Day, making it easier to fit voting into your busy schedules.  Early voting will be held on the ground floor of the Lincoln Parish Courthouse at the Registrar of Voters Office.

But voting should not begin when we walk into the voting booth; it begins with education. Take the time to learn what is on your ballot. Know the offices being contested. Research the candidates. Read about the constitutional amendments. Ask questions. Seek reliable information rather than depending on social media posts, rumors, or political advertisements.

We also encourage voters to check their voter registration status before Election Day. Make sure your registration information is current and that you know where you are supposed to vote.  Don’t stop with yourself.  Encourage your family members, friends, neighbors and coworkers to register, become informed and vote.  Help an elderly neighbor understand the ballot.  Encourage a first-time voter to participate. Share reliable voting information. Talk with your children and grandchildren about the importance of civic participation.  Our democracy is strengthened when people participate.

The Ruston Voters League encourage citizens to be informed, think critically, and make their own decisions at the ballot box. Your vote belongs to you.

Your voice matters. Your participation matters. Your vote matters.

Don’t sit this election out.  Exercise your right.  Use your voice.  Vote!
