Stolen vehicle recovered by RPD

A Ruston Police officer was conducting stationary patrol when a black Ford Focus that matched the description of a stolen vehicle was observed. The officer also noticed the vehicle swerved from one side of the road to the other.

The officer got behind the vehicle and turned on the overhead lights to initiate a traffic stop, but the vehicle did not stop, turning on Dan Reneau Drive toward South Homer Street. The officer turned on the sirens, but the vehicle continued traveling east and finally was stopped by officers who were blocking the roadway on West California Avenue.

After receiving verbal commands to exit the vehicle, the driver, D’kyrus Burks, 23, of Ruston, did not comply, and an officer had to extract Burks from the vehicle.

Burks said the vehicle was his, but officers had confirmation that the Ford Focus had been reported stolen.

Officers also found a suspended driver’s license on Burks and a firearm located in the backpack of the vehicle.

Burks had previously been arrested in January at Tech’s Student Center. Then, he was charged with criminal trespass and resisting an officer.
