About 100 supporters braved the sweltering heat on Monday evening as they came out to support Bruce Siegmund at his kickoff event for re-election to the Ward 5 alderman seat.
Siegmund, who has served on the Ruston Board of Aldermen for the past 12 years, greeted supporters throughout the evening as they discussed the city’s future and his vision for another term. The “come-and-go” event attracted current leaders, some campaigning for positions, business leaders and Ward 5 community members.
Hosted by Mayor Ronny Walker and his wife, Kay Walker, the support was a bit overwhelming to Siegmund. Walker has publicly endorsed Siegmund’s re-election campaign.
“I couldn’t believe how many people turned out to come and show support and share their hopes and concerns,” said Siegmund. “They just kept coming and coming. It was almost difficult for me to spend enough time with all of them. I had lowered my expectations since so many had responded to me that they were out of town or had other conflicts.
“The heat at 5 p.m. was enough to keep anyone away, but they came anyway, and I’m grateful for that. These supporters expressed how much they want to see Ruston continue moving forward, despite the road work, lane closures, closed bridges and traffic. I think most of us realize that these inconveniences are part of progress.”
The event was held at the Tanyard Creek Student Center, a development Siegmund said reflects the city’s emphasis on successful public-private partnerships and continued growth.
Once supporters got out of the heat, they were treated well with the amenities offered by Hank Moore and the Tanyard Creek Student Center, which hosted the event.
The spacious, beautiful center is usually an oasis for about 900 students who make their home in the new development that most visitors had never been aware of. This night, it was transformed into a venue for local leaders and residents to mix and mingle over cold drinks and good food. The two hours were spent with supporters coming and going while meeting one another in the comfortable facility. Many marveled at just how nice it was and how unaware they were of the development.
“I chose this venue because it represents so much of what we have done in this city over the last 10 years or so,” Siegmund said. “Mayor Walker and this board have encouraged so many public-private partnerships. This development is a favorite for LA Tech students, parents and even the Tech administration. The gated community offers safety and community for off-campus Tech students. That safety makes it a parent favorite.
“I have found that we now have fewer homes in our neighborhoods being turned into student rentals, and there are more families renting now in our Ward 5 neighborhoods. So now, people like myself, who like to go to bed early and have quiet evenings, are able to have similar neighbors. Another bonus is that this development pours in more than $400,000 a year in property taxes. This boosts revenues for the city, the parish and the School Board and enables us to provide more services to our local Ruston residents.”
Many of Siegmund’s supporters commented on their faith in the veteran Ruston alderman.
“Tonight’s kickoff reflected more than the start of a campaign,” said Ward 5 resident Emmanuel Seals, who came to support Siegmund. “It brought together neighbors who care deeply about the future of Ruston. I appreciate leaders who remain accessible, listen to their constituents and are committed to thoughtful, collaborative leadership that benefits our entire community.”
“Kathy and I are pleased that Bruce has agreed to run as our alderman,” said Jon Johansen. “His experienced leadership and godly character are exactly what American towns need.”
Siegmund voiced his appreciation for the turnout and support and said his campaign will continue to focus on responsible growth and serving the residents of Ruston.
“I can’t tell you how much this support means to me,” said Siegmund. “Local neighbors, local business people who have invested and given much to this community, and even the Tech students who appreciate the Ruston that they are enjoying. I came here to go to Tech many years ago and decided to stay because I love this community.
