RUSTON – It took an extra five minutes to decide the winner between Louisiana Tech and Stephen F. Austin on Wednesday inside the Thomas Assembly Center on Karl Malone Court.

It ended up being the Lumberjacks who prevailed as AJ Cajuste made the game-winning basket with 0.9 seconds left in an 80-79 decision.

LA Tech (6-4) and SFA (6-4) got its points in different ways all night. The Bulldogs were dominant in the paint, outscoring their opponent 54-28. It was needed as one of the best three-point shooting teams in the country managed just a season-low four triples.

“Every possession matters,” said Tech head coach Talvin Hester. “All of the mistakes throughout the game accumulated to them winning by one. It was not just the last possession, it was a bunch of possessions throughout the game that we could have changed the outcome.”

Meanwhile, the ‘Jacks got much of their scoring from beyond the arc, draining 14 three-pointers. The 12th one came from Cajuste to give the visiting team a 68-66 advantage with 35 seconds remaining in regulation.

LA Tech turned it over on the next possession, but got one more crack at sending it to OT after SFA’s Nana Antwi-Boasiako missed the front end of a one-and-one. And tie it up they did as Cobe Williams dished out one of his career-high 11 assists to Kenny Hunter who made the layup to knot up the score at 68-all.

Cajuste attempted to end the game, but Williams came up with a block to force the extra frame.

The Lumberjacks got three-pointers No. 13 and 14 from Kyle Hayman to build a small 76-72 advantage with 1:29 to play in overtime.

“At the end of the day, you are going to give up something,” said Hester. “We turned them over 28 times and dominated points in the paint. Every team is going to do something to score. We kept them out of the paint and out of transition. People are going to score somehow and they did it with 14 threes.”

Meanwhile, Williams continued to will the team back in it, just as he did in the second half when LA Tech got down 59-51 after SFA went on a 17-2 run to erase the home team’s largest lead at 49-42.

The fourth-year guard made another dish to Hunter for the alley-oop slam and then converted an old-fashioned three-point play with four ticks on the clock to give the ‘Dogs an 80-79 lead. However, Cajuste had just enough time to take the ball the length of the floor and make the game-winning attempt.

Williams finished with his first career double-double, scoring a game-high 23 points to go along with his 11 dimes. The two-time C-USA All-Defensive Team selection also had a career-high five steals.

“It was always tough losing at home,” said Williams. “I was just playing hard, trying to do anything for my team to get a win. On defense, we have to keep working on our rotations. We have to break this game down, move on from it, and get ready for conference on Saturday.”

Hunter was sensational off the bench, posting a career-high 16 points on 8-of-9 shooting. The freshman Jordan Crawford was the third Bulldog in double figures with 13 points.

SFA had five players score double-digit points, led by Hayman who had 18.

A first in the space race

In the mid-1960s, the space race, the competition between the United States and the Soviet Union, Cold War rivals, was at its peak.  At first, the Soviet Union was ahead.  They sent up the first artificial satellite (Sputnik 1), sent the first human into space (Yuri Gagarin), and had the first human make a “spacewalk” (Alexei Leonov).  America had to play catch up, but had several firsts as well.  This is the true story about one of the American firsts in space.

Launching people into space has always been dangerous, and so it was with the Gemini 6 mission.  Gemini 6, crewed by command pilot Walter Schirra and pilot Thomas Stafford, was scheduled for launch on October 25, 1965.  One of their main objectives included four dockings with an unmanned space vehicle, the Agena Target Vehicle.  On the morning of October 25, Schirra and Stafford boarded the Gemini 6 spacecraft and prepared for launch.  During their preparations, NASA launched the unmanned target vehicle on a separate rocket.  Six minutes into the unmanned craft’s flight, a catastrophic failure caused it to explode.  As the target vehicle was needed for the mission, NASA cancelled the Gemini 6 launch.

NASA rescheduled the spaceflight for December 12, 1965, with an altered mission objective referred to as Gemini 6A, to rendezvous but not dock with Gemini 7, a spacecraft crewed by command pilot Frank Borman and piloted by James “Jim” Lovell.  As they had done on the previous launch attempt, Schirra and Stafford boarded the spacecraft and prepared for launch.  At 9:54 a.m., the main engines ignited and, after just a second and a half, shut down abruptly.  Engineers determined the cause of the problem was a plastic dust cover mistakenly left inside the booster when it was assembled months earlier.  Engineers removed the cover and, after reinspecting the spacecraft, deemed it safe to fly.

Three days later, on the morning of December 15, astronauts Schirra and Stafford boarded the rocket for another attempt.  At 8:37, the spacecraft lifted off and rocketed into space in what engineers called a textbook launch.  After four orbits, Gemini 6A propelled towards Gemini 7 for the planned rendezvous.  The two spacecrafts carefully positioned themselves, and at one point, came within one foot of each other, and the astronauts conversed over their radios.  This was the first rendezvous of two spacecrafts in space.  After nearly four hours of remaining together in close proximity, Gemini 6A positioned itself 19 miles from Gemini 7 to ensure that there would be no accidental collisions while the astronauts slept.

On the following morning, December 16, 1965, as the crew of Gemini 6A prepared for reentry into the Earth’s atmosphere, they radioed a distressing message to the Houston space center:

“…this is Gemini VI. We have an object, looks like a satellite going from north to south, up in a polar orbit. He’s in a very low trajectory traveling from north to south and has a very high climbing ratio. It looks like it might even be a … Very low. Looks like he might be going to reenter soon. Stand by one … You might just let me try to pick up that thing.”

Then, over the radio, Gemini 7 and the Houston space center heard a metallic jingling sound along with some musical notes.  They were relieved when they realized that Schirra was playing a harmonica and Stafford was shaking some bells, instruments that the stowage people at Cape Kennedy would have had to approve for the flight.  This was another first in the space race as it was the first song ever played in space.  The name of the song astronauts Schirra and Stafford played in space was “Jingle Bells.”

LPPJ makes year-end budget moves

By T. Scott Boatright

Money matters to wrap up 2022 and prepare for 2023 were the main orders of business Tuesday night as the Lincoln Parish Police Jury held its December meeting at the Lincoln Parish Library Events Center.

Jurors Skip Russell, Joe Henderson and Hazel Hunter were all absent from the meeting.

The LPPJ approved adoption of the Humanitarian Enterprises of Lincoln Parish 2022 amended and 2023 proposed budgets, the LPPJ 2022 amended and 2023 proposed budgets, the Lincoln Parish Library 2022 amended and 2023 proposed budgets, the North Louisiana Exhibition Center’s 2022 amended and 2023 proposed budgets, and the 2022 amended and 2023 proposed budgets.

All of that voting was unanimous.

Humanitarian Enterprises of Lincoln Parish’s estimated expenditures and other financing for 2022 totaled $982,009 while estimated 2022 revenues stand at $977,166.dl’;

The LPPJ’s total budget for 2022 expenditures and other financing as well as revenues and other financing balanced out at $25,635,965 each.

Jurors also approved appointments of members to the Tremont Water District and Waterworks District No. 2.

Reappointed to the Tremont Water District was Wayne McNabb (five-year term) while Paul Brazzel was appointed to that district, also on a five-year term.

Appointed to the Waterworks District No. 2 were Harold Parker (five-year term), Darryl Johnson (four-year term), Billy Jack Talton (three-year term), Lisa Mangum (two-year term) and George Parkman (one-year term).

“We announced (the Waterworks District 2) vacancies at our last meeting and I will note that one of the things I was asked about was staggering those terms,” said Parish Administrator Doug Postel. “We did contract the officials at Waterworks District No. 2 and they did agree to provide us with names with those staggered terms.”

Jurors also approved its Capital Improvement Plan for 2023-25, amending it by adding a portion of Monday road that Postel said he and other officials visited recently and found that deterioration was significantly worse than the last time it was studied.

That plan includes $2,817,433 in expected costs for 2023, $3,600,090 in projected costs for 2024 and $2,609,090 in predicted expenditures for 2025.

In other business, the LPPJ approved use of coronavirus funding from the state for the Lincoln Outdoors program for design of mountain biking trails at Lincoln Parish Park.

“This company, Dirt Coasters, did the designs for the trails at Bogue Chitto State Park, which has seen an increase of more than 50,000 visitors per year for the purpose of riding on those trails,” Postel said. “They’ve been recognized throughout the South as one of the top design companies around, so we’re going to enter into contract with them to design this project.

Engineering consultant Henry Shuler also presented a Water Sector Grant report to jurors during the meeting.

“Lincoln Parish has two water sewer treatment plants and what this plan does is connect those systems into one treatment plant. I think that’s the best move y’all can make for the sewage system.”

Shuler said that the $2 million project will include around a $250,000 expenditure to the LPPJ to combine with other secured funding.

“I wish I could get it for free, but this will be 20 years at 0.95% interest,” Shuler said. “What I’m telling you is that this is as good as you could possibly do. … For us, based on population numbers, to get the kind of funding we did — this was a home run and I could not be any prouder of finding a way to make this happen.”

Suspicious person arrested on warrants

A Ruston man was arrested Monday morning after police spotted him hiding in a vacant building.

A Ruston Police shift supervisor was on patrol about 8:45 a.m. when he saw the man crouched down in a vacant building on E. Mississippi Avenue. Jabarri Thurman, 23, was found on the old city power plant property now owned by a Monroe development company. Thurman was not authorized to be in the building.

A records check revealed four warrants for Thurman’s arrest for failing to appear in Ruston City Court.

Thurman was arrested and booked at the Lincoln Parish Detention Center for criminal trespass and the warrants for simple battery, resisting an officer, and two counts of driving under suspension.

Woman arrested at domestic call

A Ruston woman was arrested early Saturday morning after she allegedly struck her boyfriend and took his phone.

Ruston Police responded to a Kavanaugh Road apartment about 2:30 a.m. Saturday morning. The victim said he was sitting at a table with coworkers when his girlfriend of five year grabbed his cell phone and ran into the bathroom, locking the door. When she exited the bathroom, she ran outside and threw his phone across the yard. She then reportedly approached him aggressively and struck him on the head with her open hand. The victim said he retrieved his phone and called the police.

Amber Cowsar, 37, admitted she struck the victim’s head with an open hand. She was arrested and handcuffed but then attempted to pull away from the officer several times in an attempt to attack the victim. She refused to stop pulling away and had to be restrained until she calmed down.

Cowsar was taken to the Lincoln Parish Detention Center and booked for domestic abuse battery and resisting an officer.

Bail was set at $1,500.

Panthers put five on All-District 2-1A team

Playing in the same district as Division IV Select School state champion Ouachita Christian along with Cedar Creek and St. Frederick, which both also reached the playoffs, made for a tough season for the Lincoln Preparatory School Panthers.

But the Panthers, who finished at 3-9 after a first-round playoff loss at Ascension Catholic, still managed to put five players on the 2022 All-District 2-1A football team.

Lincoln Prep’s lone first-team selection for athlete Brandon Heard, who played wide receiver, running back, quarterback and defensive back for the Panthers.

“I can’t help but wish we could have cloned him and had more of him,” Panthers coach Glen Hall said. “Brandon did a little bit of everything for us. He’s just a great overall athlete with solid skills and had a strong season back on the football field.”

Heard played football as a freshman before moving to basketball only for two seasons during the COVID pandemic before returning to the gridiron for his senior season.

As a receiver, Heard hauled in 40 passes for 656 receiving yards — that’s 16.4 yards per reception — and seven touchdowns.

But Heard did much more than catch.

Also seeing playing time at running back and even a little under center, Heard added 279 yards and three touchdowns on 55 carries while also returning kicks to push his all-purpose yards total to 998 yards on 96 touches.

Lincoln Prep seniors Bralyn Mayfield, Jamarion Buggs and offensive lineman Lathan Elmore all were named second-team all-district selections.

Mayfield connected on 62-of-146 of his pass attempts for 1/114 yards for 11 touchdowns while adding 148 yards and another score on 28 carries.

Buggs caught 14 passes on the season for 297 yards with three of those going for touchdowns.

Senior Chauncey Harper is the Panthers’ lone defensive player on the all-district team, earning second-team honors.

Overcoming multiple injuries, the Lincoln Prep safety totaled 19 tackles (14 solo) on the season with two interceptions returned for 55 yards along with six pass defenses, one sack and one forced fumble.

For the remainder of this week, the LPJ will run letters and from community supporters for the Ruston Bearcats after their run to the Superdome. Submissions to lpjnewsla@gmail.com will be accepted through 12/15/22.

Dear Ruston 2022 Football,

This has been one of the most exciting football season ever. You have done more than play football. I have seen so much unity  and love displayed in the stands, community as well as on the field.

The coaches were awesome.

Thank you Coach Baugh and staff.

The Bearcats may have lost the championship game, but they have so much more they have given to the City of Ruston than anyone could imagine.

Our job now, as a community is to not let them forget that. Let ‘s continue to thank them for being a part of history, District 5 Champs as well as a just being a part of this journey.

As I share this conversation Jaden Osborne and his mom had when he was a Ruston Junior High seventh grader regarding the West Monroe team, I hope you find in it what I did. I found the sincere and love that he has for the game as well as the team, the love for his grandfather (Late Larry Douglas), and the determination to follow his vision he had for RHS Football Team.

JADEN’s MEMORIES
7th grade Jaden- “Momma, our team is going to make Ruston great again.”

Me- “Oh really, what makes you say that?”

7th grade Jaden- “It’s just a mental thing with West Monroe, we don’t believe we can win, we’re going to win when we get to the high school, but papa won’t be here to see it.”

Me- “Yes he will, and he’ll have the best seat in the house 😇

Go Bearcats!
Congratulations!
You got me hooked!
See you next season!🏈

____________
Congratulations to the 2022 Bearcat team!

Your talents, effort, and teamwork led to success on the field which may help future teams play for and win championships.

Your season was very much like the 1984 team, of which I was a part, which also finished 13-2 with loses in an early game and the state championship.  As such, here’s what I would tell my younger self which I hope is helpful to you:

(1) Your true identity is not based upon success or losses in a sport, classroom, your future job, or in worldly things.  Truth be told, the 1984 team, except for those connected to it, is rightly overshadowed, and perhaps even forgotten, due to the championship teams of that era.  Similarly, your efforts this year should they lead to future championships may also, ironically, lead to the 2022 team being overshadowed, too.  But, even the championship teams will one day be largely forgotten.  Know this though: The only identity that has eternal meaning is whether you trust, love and follow Jesus, or not.  The Good News is that by committing your life to Him “all things work together for good to them that love God.” (Romans 8:28)

(2) Football can teach teamwork, discipline, toughness, leadership, and humility. Since most cannot play it beyond high school, its value is primarily in these life lessons and the relationships which are built.  Keep the wins and losses in that perspective, don’t dwell unhealthily on either, and commit going forward to define “winning” through the lens of scripture and Christ’s gospel.

(3) Look to be part of building in Ruston or whatever future place God leads you a life, family, church and community that honors Jesus and loves its neighbors.  This is the type of legacy to which we all should aspire.

Godspeed going forward!

Merry First Day of Christmas

Today is the unofficial First Day of Christmas since it’s 12 days until The Big Day, which means it’s fixing to be Christmas.

That we say “fixing to” instead of “about to” is one of the joys of being a Southerner. Who said it first, I don’t know, but bless his heart, and merry First Day of Christmas to you.

Some traditions hold that the First Day of Christmas is December 25, and the 12 days run into the New Year. Who wants to wait that long? Not me. We’re fixing to start celebrating now.

Speaking of things southern, we’ve been working on some carols, Southern-themed:

“I’m dreaming of a white cornbread,
In every skillet that’s in sight.
May the sides be crispy, to bite,
And may all your cornbreads be just right.”

Or, how about . . .

“Pork skins roasting on an open fire.
Chittlins’ nipping at your nose.
Waylon and Willy being sung by the fire,
While dad spends Christmas Eve at Lowe’s.”

Give me some time to work on it …

Thankfully, the most important songs were written at the dawn of time and wait as gifts for us to receive and to sing with sincerity, even as the angels sang, that long-ago Judean night, as Luke recorded:

“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace,
goodwill toward men.”

Peace and goodwill came to earth, to men, in the flesh and as a baby. Only God could have thought of something like that.

William Billings, regarded as America’s first choral composer, captured — at least as well as a human mind can — the mystery of the incarnation in his Shepherd’s Carol, composed in New England in the mid-1700s.

“Seek not in courts or palaces,
nor royal curtains draw.
But search the stable, see your God
extended on the straw.”

God, extended on the straw.

Extended, as a baby, a stretching newborn.  Extended, from a heavenly throne to an earthly manger.  Extended, to mankind and to man, to each of us, individually.

God extends his hand.  Even to me.  Even to you.

Christmas is always the opportunity to receive the best gift of all, a new birth in our old selves. And a new song the Psalmist told us about.

“He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God . . ..”

Now some 2,000 years after Christ’s birth, the message is the same.  A 19th century minister named Phillips Brooks reminds us, each year at this time, that the Good News is everlasting.  If we choose to be quiet, we might even hear the song, the new song, born in a manger.

“How silently, how silently
the wondrous gift is given!
So God imparts to human hearts
the blessings of His heaven.
No ear may hear His coming,
but in this world of sin,
where meek souls will receive him still,
the dear Christ enters in.”

If no one’s wished you Merry Christmas yet, I’m “fixing to.” Let me be the first. Here’s hoping we can get in tune with the baby and ourselves and each other, and make this our best song yet.

Life lessons from a trail run

This past weekend, I competed in the Run Caney 12-mile trail run event near Minden, Louisiana.  Every three months, I select some race or fitness event to participate in as part of my goal setting process for the quarter.  As I train each day, the goal of the event provides me with the structure for my training (management), incentive for my training (motivation), and tracking of my progress (measurement).  While my purpose is to live a healthy life and have an identity as an athlete (even at my age), the goals are helpful as I pursue this purpose and identity.  Achieving the goal is not the end, but merely a mile marker along the pathway to purpose and identity.

With that as the backdrop, this race was the toughest challenge that I have faced since beginning this endeavor several years ago.  Twelve miles is a long way, and the hills and terrain of a trail race made it much more difficult than the half-marathon that I did earlier this year.  This trail had all the normal obstacles of any trail through the woods.  There were the steep hills to manage, the ever-present roots to watch out for, a few streams to jump over, and various other natural obstacles to deal with along the path.

It took me just under two hours and twenty minutes to complete the two loops of the six-mile trail.  As always, I look back at the challenges and see so many similarities to life that one encounters on races such as this one.

Going up steep hills:  We are all going to face difficult challenges in life.  As we approach the base and start to look up, we can’t see the top at times.  We have no idea when it will level out.  All we know for sure is that it is going to be hard.  The key to running up any actual hill or taking on any stiff challenge in life is to keep moving and keep pushing forward.  Don’t stop.  Lean into the challenge and just keep pushing forward focused on the next step.  Don’t worry about how you are going to do ten steps later, but rather just stay focused on pushing forward with that next step.  Whatever you are going through today, just keep getting up each morning and take that next step.  You may not be able to see the end, and you may be exhausted.  Just keep taking one more step.  Momentum is the key here.

Going down a steep hill:  We will also face times where it seems like life is out of control.  Going down a steep hill in a race can be somewhat like that if we don’t handle it carefully.  I saw some reckless, dangerous actions going down hills Saturday morning.  They were completely out of control.  That happens in life as well.  When you come to points in life where things can start spinning out of control, the key is to slow down, focus on where to make that next step, be mindful of obstacles that could trip you up, and maneuver down carefully.  You don’t need to stop, but you need to adjust, monitor, and move with caution.  Adjust as needed to stay in control until things level out.

Run your race, not someone else’s:  On trail runs, I like to stay close to others that are more familiar with the course.  I don’t want to take the wrong path.  The key though is to find people that are running at a pace that fits me.  I didn’t do that for the first mile Saturday.  I ran with a group that was running way too fast for me, and I ultimately found out that they were just running the six-mile option of the race.  Life can be like that as well.  We need to run our race at a pace that fits our ability, our potential, and not run at a pace for someone else’s race.  Running at someone else’s pace for their race can be exhausting and lead to a miserable experience in life (as well as a trail race).  I made an adjustment Saturday morning before it was too late and got back to my pace on my race.  You may need to make an adjustment as well.

The roots will trip you:  Some roots are larger than others, and some are visible while others can’t be seen for various reasons.  In any of these cases, they will trip you if you aren’t careful.  You either go over or around them.  The key is to watch the ground in front of you anticipating where you need to take the next steps to avoid danger.  Life has its share of “roots” along our pathways as well just looking to trip us.  Like the race, we know what many of the potential dangers look like but may not recognize all of them.  In running, the keys are to watch and pick your feet up as you run.  In life, we also need to be aware of obstacles and not grow weary of making wise decisions.

There’s a lot to learn in a little over two hours of exhausting trail running.  I guess I learn lessons the hard way.  In any case, that goal is accomplished and Sunday morning at 5 a.m. was time to start training for that next challenge.  More to come and more to learn.

Bearcat boys basketball picks up another win

By Kyle Roberts

Ruston’s Bearcat hoopers took a 70-48 win over Arcadia Monday night on the road and improved their overall record to 10-1 on the season.

Parker wins construction engineering technology T-shirt design competition

(from left) Program Chair Mr. Reginald Jeter, awardee Lauren Parker, and Program Administrative Assistant Sue Antony

When Construction Engineering Technology (CET) freshman Lauren Parker saw that her program was offering a new T-shirt design competition, she knew that she wanted to create a design that showed off the program’s contributions to Louisiana Tech.

Parker, who chose CET because of her love for business and construction, wanted her design to expand on the theme that won the previous competition in 2019. Since the previous design defined construction engineering technology for people outside the major, Parker decided to take that a step further and show how the skills CET majors learn impact society. To do that, she highlighted the construction elements of the College of Engineering and Science’s most recent addition to campus, the Integrated Engineering and Science Building (IESB).

“I picked the blueprint of the IESB because it is where CET majors study together, host meetings for student organizations like the Associated General Contractors and the newly founded Louisiana Society of Professional Land Surveyors, and engage in practical and hands-on learning. Plus, because the IESB is so new to campus that it has a different architectural appeal than many older buildings, there is a lot of interest regarding its construction. I wanted prospective and current students to know that, ultimately, the incredible feat that is the IESB would not have been built without those in CET-related fields. I really do believe that the foundation for a better future is at Louisiana Tech and will be built by my CET classmates and those to come!”

Program chair Reginald Jeter says that the competition had numerous great entries this year, and Parker’s vision to explore the effects construction engineering technology has had on campus gave her the edge.

“The judges had a challenging task to select the winner because there were several very good designs submitted,” he said. “Lauren won with her design using an IESB plan and the many opportunities available with a CET degree. Congratulations to Lauren!!”

Dogs host reigning WAC champs tonight at TAC

Louisiana Tech looks to bounce back tonight as the Bulldogs play host to reigning WAC regular season champion Stephen F. Austin on national television. Fans are encouraged to wear red as part of the annual “Red Out” game.

Tipoff at the Thomas Assembly Center is set for 6 p.m. and the game can be heard on 107.5 FM and via the LA Tech Athletics app. It can also be seen on ESPNU.

Tonight marks the 15th meeting all-time between LA Tech and Stephen F. Austin with the series being knotted up at 7-7. The 14 meetings have been scattered throughout the years, first playing twice to open the 1939-40 season. The two squads last played a home-and-home in 2017-18 with the road team winning both times.

The Bulldogs have won five of the last six meetings, including a 96-93 overtime victory in Nacogdoches in 2018.

LA Tech (6-3) had their five-game winning streak come to an end with a 92-65 loss at Wyoming this past Saturday. A nine-minute stretch in the first half was the difference in the game as the Cowboys went on a 23-5 run.

Despite the loss, the Bulldogs made 10 three-pointers in the matchup. They currently rank second in Conference USA and 24th in the country in three-pointers made per game at 9.9. They have made at least nine threes in seven of their nine games (averaging 11.4 made triples over there last five games).

David Green had his breakout game of the season in Laramie, coming off the bench to score a career-tying 21 points. In only 16 minutes played, the forward went 7-of-9 from the field and 4-of-5 from beyond the arc, becoming the fifth Bulldog this season to score at least 20 points in a single game.

In recent history, LA Tech has done a good job of bouncing back from losses. The ‘Dogs have suffered back-to-back defeats only four times over the last three-plus seasons. Even more impressive, they are 42-1 over the last decade when playing at home immediately following a road/neutral site loss.

Stephen F. Austin (5-4) has been up-and-down this season, winning three of its first four games followed by a stretch of losing three of four games. The Lumberjacks cracked the .500 barrier this past Sunday with a lopsided 103-40 victory at home against Paul Quinn.

SFA played in the Western Athletic Conference for the first season last year, claiming the WAC regular season title with a 14-4 league mark. The Lumberjacks were picked to finish third in the 2022-23 WAC preseason rankings behind Grand Canyon and New Mexico State.

Offensively, SFA ranks 28th in the country in field goal percentage at 47.4. Defensively, they excel at turning people over, ranking fourth in the country in forced TOs at 18.06 per game.

The Lumberjacks get contributions from everyone as seven different players average at least eight points per game. They are anchored by the trio of Sadaidriene Hall, Latrell Jossell, and Nigel Hawkins who average 12-13 points per game. Hall was an All-WAC Preseason Second Team selection.

Jimmerson, McGuire wed

Lilla Mary Elise Jimmerson of Ruston, Louisiana, and Christopher Scott McGuire of Benton, Louisiana, were united in holy matrimony at 4:00 P. M. on Saturday, November 26, 2022, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Ruston in a ceremony officiated by the Rev. Roger Michael “Micky” Cloud. The bride was presented for Christian marriage by her father.

Lilla is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Dalridge Jimmerson of Ruston. Lilla earned a B. A. in Speech-Language Pathology with an Audiology concentration and an M. A. in English with a Technical Writing concentration from Louisiana Tech University. She works as a technical writer for General Dynamics Information Technology.

Chris is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Scott Kelly McGuire of Benton. Chris earned a B. S. in Marketing from Louisiana Tech University and works as an agent for New York Life Insurance Company.

For her wedding day, the bride chose an ivory crepe and Mikado silk gown from the Justin Alexander Signature Collection. The gown featured a Sabrina neckline with a ruched shoulder detail, a long-sleeved crepe bodice with asymmetrical pleating on the shoulder and a keyhole back, and a classic royal A-line skirt in Mikado silk with a chapel-length train accented with silk-covered buttons. She wore a cathedral-length veil accented with sequined lace from the fingertip to the hem and a silver headband with crystals and pearls in a floral-leaf pattern. She carried a hand-tied bouquet of Playa Blanca garden roses, Royal Porcelina blush roses, and white spray roses accented by white lisianthus, waxflower, and parvifolia and silver dollar eucalyptus. The bride’s bouquet, the wedding party’s flowers, and the floral arrangements in the sanctuary were designed by Lori Golden.

The bride was attended by Allison Brister Burkhardt as matron of honor and Hannah Mae Myles as maid of honor. Bridesmaids included Kelly Lynn Doughty, Samantha Hawthorne Kennedy, and Adela Marie Trevino. The flower girl was Adelyn Louise Bridge, the bride’s cousin. Chloe Elise Green and Madeline Elizabeth Robison, also cousins of the bride, attended the guest book.

The groom was attended by best men Kody Duane Chapman and Michael Chad Johnson. Groomsmen included Demarria Danzell Green, Andrew Griffin Cole, and Jacoby Jerome Thornton. The ring bearer was Henry Delano Fauber, the groom’s cousin. Another cousin of the bride, Maxwell Gregory Braswell, and Preston Ryan Gray served as ushers.

Musicians for the wedding ceremony included pianist Jeanne Dickson Patterson, organist Deborah McClung Guillory, and vocalist Chanley Ellen Patterson. Mary “Duddy” Garrett served as the church’s wedding coordinator, and Karen Malone Webre, and Lisa White Owens assisted her.

Following the ceremony, a reception with dinner and dancing was held at Squire Creek Country Club in Choudrant under the direction of the club’s event coordinator, Lane Titus. Chef Matt Voorhees supervised the dinner, and Heather Bailey of Social Bites created both the bride’s and the groom’s cakes. Lilla’s cake was a five-tiered Italian cream cake topped with fresh flowers, while Chris’s cake was a two-tiered strawberries and cream cake in a Star Wars theme. The venue was decorated with floral creations by Lori Golden. The Fabulous Equinox Orchestra of Savannah, Georgia, provided the music and entertainment. To conclude the reception, the orchestra’s horn section led a New Orleans-style second line, and guests blew bubbles to send off the happy couple. Lilla and Chris departed the reception in a vintage Mercedes owned and driven by Kelly Kyle.

Prior to the wedding, many friends and family members celebrated the couple with parties and showers. The bride’s parents hosted an engagement celebration in their home on December 18, 2021. The groom’s parents hosted a “Six-Month Countdown” fiesta at their home on May 26, 2022.

A “Stock the Kitchen and Bar” couples shower on August 13 at the Bossier Arts Center was hosted by Donna Elledge, Morgan Elledge, Antoinette Fauber, Morgan Fauber, Sharon McGuire, and Danielle Wallis. On August 20, Laurie Brister, Allison Burkhardt, Toni Crawford, Hannah Myles, Margo Myles, and Emma Richardson hosted a bridal tea in Ruston at the Bridge’s Downtown Campus.

The bride was honored with a shower at Uptown Social Venue in Ruston on September 17, hosted by Sue Barfield, Laura Chestnut, Martie Clary, Diana Humphries, Ginger Pickett, Denise Pyles, Sandy Simmons, and Carrie Williams. On October 1, Allison Brigham, Suzanne Chapman, Lee Ann Lane, and Donna Wise hosted a “Honey Do” couples shower at the Lane home in Shreveport.

A bridal tea at the Dove House Tea Room in Arcadia on October 29 was hosted by Amy Green, Barbara Green, and Kayla Robison. On November 12, Sue Barfield, Sharon Haddox, Kathy McKneely, Theresa Nichols, and Lisa Owens hosted a bridal brunch at the Driggers home at Squire Creek in Choudrant. The night before the wedding, the groom’s parents hosted a rehearsal dinner at Trio’s in Ruston, where music was provided by Trey Gauthreaux.

After a honeymoon at the Excellence Punta Cana Resort in the Dominican Republic, Lilla and Chris are making their home in Bossier City, Louisiana, with their dogs Josie, Winston, and Piper.
